Is It Difficult Working as a Freelancer From Home?

Yes…! As a freelancer working from home, some challenges are likely to come your way. But that should not worry you at all.

The beauty about challenges is that they make you wiser- more capable of making successful decisions. Wise people learn from their mistakes; they don’t give up. By experiencing difficulties, you become more prepared and confident in making better decisions.

In order to become a more effective freelancer, its important that you familiarize yourself with some of these challenges you may not have encountered yet.

Challenges faced by most freelancers

One of the most common challenge associated with freelancing is the feeling of isolation from the rest of the working environment. While working from home, you spend the bulk of your time alone or with family members who may not truly understand what your work entails. Truth be told, you miss the idea of having colleagues  who share professional ideas and offer moral support when your spirit is low.

This should certainly not slow you down. By sharing with people around you and getting them interested in what you do, you will learn to overcome your fears. In fact, more often than not, the best support comes from loved ones who know and understand you best.

Secondly, working from home can sometimes be boring compromising the quality of your work. Create an outlet to help you recharge. If you are into the social scene, do that. If painting is your thing, pull out those brushes. It will do wonders for you. After a bit of play you’ll find that work can actually be a lot of fun.

Being your own boss can be quite difficult and has been known to have some drawbacks. Why do I say so?

Because unless you are disciplined, have set clear targets with specific time lines and have a solid plan to achieve these, you may find yourself putting off things that need to be done. Distractions from family and friends are also common challenges. Make sure you create breaks in between your work to deal with this.

Other hardships associated with freelancing include:

  • Seasonal employment, which limits the opportunity to make steady income
  • Delayed payments, which affect your cash flows
  • Lack of health security since your job doesn’t offer health insurance
  • Competition especially at the beginning when you have to build your profile with clients

Benefits of freelancing

As much as difficulties in freelancing exist, the opportunity and income is limitless. This is true because you can obligate yourself to as many responsibilities as you are capable of managing.  Your dedication and determination will go a long way in helping you realize the opportunity in freelancing.

I personally enjoy working from home since it has helped me cut down on costs that I would have otherwise incurred by running a brick and mortar office. It has also increased my flexibility by allowing me the choice of when to work. I work at my own pace, setting my own deadlines  under no pressure whatsoever.

Freelancing has  created opportunities for me to interact with different professionals, increasing my associations and diversifying my networks. As a family man, freelancing has allowed me to spend more time with my family. I consider this a very big blessing.
