Freelancing Your Way to Freedom

Freelancing can yield a lucrative and rewarding career right from the comfort of your home.  However, it can go either way–feast or famine. So how do you freelance your way to freedom? Here are some easy tips and scenarios to consider while making that transition.

Long-term clients

Instead of focusing all your energy into nailing that next client, concentrate on turning the ones that you have into long term prospects. Ask yourself: What other services can I offer existing clients? How can I get that similar job next time round?  Offer outstanding customer service and watch as these relationships develop into lasting partnerships.

Up-sell

When you get a client, be sure to inform them of the other services you offer. This is usually a great opportunity to up-sell to someone who has already said yes to you. Do it at the beginning of your relationship or as the project nears completion—if they are happy with your services they’ll most likely take up the offer.

Referrals

Don’t be afraid to ask for referrals from current and past clients. And on that note be sure to keep tabs on their whereabouts. Keep your database up-to-date by sending the occasional follow-up letter or email. This will ensure they don’t forget about you either. Use referrals to your advantage since they are the easiest prospects to convert.

Cross-sell

When a client engages you for a service, ask yourself what other services on your offer list complements it. If for instance they want business cards designed, offer letterheads and envelopes to match. As a freelancer there are many ways to cross-sell services.

It may sound cliché but think outside the box, provide a great service at great value and soon you’ll be on a luxurious vacation working on your own terms – every freelancer’s dream.
